Lithium batteries, when they are badly manufactured, can get warm fast and sometimes burst into flames, but this is no explosion. So wear your earbuds, and if one of them starts warming up rapidly, remove the earbuds and watch them to see if the hot one catches fire. If you remain paranoid, do not go to sleep in bed with your earbuds cranking Van Halen into your ear canals. Your wired earbuds work well for that.
